Mentorship remains near and dear to my heart and is something I’m very passionate about. Over the years, many people have played a positive role in my career, to which I’m truly grateful. However only a few have taken the time to pull me under their wing, deeply inspire me, and push me beyond my self-imposed limitations. To them, I am forever indebted. It’s now time for me to pay it forward.
The Challenge
Running a mentorship program can be difficult and expensive. In our discussions four challenges emerged:
1) How do we identify teachable skills?
2) How do we engage mentors who often question if they’re qualified to teach a skill?
3) Who pairs individuals?
4) How do we hold pairs accountable?
To help answer these challenges, we took an approach that intentionally placed mentee’s in the drivers seat. Working as a leader within the org, I pitched this framework & helped to develop a set of code-of-ethics.
As a committee of five, we held educational brownbags and maintained a quarterly cadence with RealSelf employees. We also took feedback, iterated & dug deep to continue to drive the program forward.
Below is the final worksheet we launched to the company in 2018.
